FAQ

What is NEBT?

Net Energy Billing Tariff or NEBT is a billing mechanism that allows solar energy system owners to receive credit for excess electricity generated by their solar panels and exported to the grid. The credits earned can offset the electricity consumed from the grid when the solar panels are not producing enough power, such as at night or during cloudy periods. It essentially enables consumers to “bank” their excess solar energy and use it later.

What should I know?

NEBT focuses on the exchange of excess solar energy with the grid, allowing you to earn credits for the exported electricity. On the other hand, a battery storage system stores excess solar energy directly on-site, providing backup power during outages and maximizing self-consumption. While NEBT relies on the grid for energy balance, a battery system offers greater autonomy and control over energy usage.

Do I need battery storage?

While NEBT allows you to offset your electricity usage by exporting excess solar power, it does not provide energy backup during grid outages. Having a battery storage system ensures that you have access to electricity even when the grid is down. It enhances energy independence, provides resilience, and allows you to maximize the self-consumption of your solar energy.

Benefits of Battery Storage System?

Energy Independence: With a battery, you can store excess solar energy and use it at night or during power outages, reducing reliance on the grid.

Time-of-Use Optimization: By storing energy during low-demand periods and using it during peak times, you can further reduce electricity costs and maximize your financial benefits.

Enhanced Resilience: During grid outages, a battery system provides a reliable backup power source, ensuring your essential appliances and devices keep running.

What should I be prepared for?

Cost: Battery systems can be an additional investment, adding to the upfront expenses of installing solar panels. However, costs have been declining in recent years.

System Sizing: Properly sizing the battery system is crucial to meet your energy needs. Having your most recent utility bills handy is very helpful. Oversizing or under-sizing the battery can affect its efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Maintenance: Like any technology, batteries require periodic maintenance and monitoring to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Solar Benefits:

Cost Savings: Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, significantly reducing or eliminating electricity bills. Return on Investment: Installing solar panels on roofs provides a long-term financial return, often paying for themselves within a few years. Increased Property Value: Solar-powered homes are in high demand, commanding higher prices and attracting eco-conscious buyers.

Renewable Energy: Solar power is a clean, renewable energy source, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and curbing greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon Footprint Reduction: Solar panels help decrease carbon footprints by generating clean electricity without emitting harmful pollutants. Sustainable Development: By harnessing the sun’s energy, solar power promotes sustainable practices and supports the transition to a greener future.

Off-Grid Capability: Solar panels on roofs enable self-sufficiency, allowing homeowners to generate their own electricity and reduce reliance on the grid. Energy Security: During power outages or emergencies, solar-equipped roofs provide a reliable source of electricity, ensuring uninterrupted power supply.

Efficiency Improvements: Ongoing advancements in solar panel technology have increased their efficiency, enabling more electricity generation in limited roof space. Aesthetically Pleasing Options: Solar panels come in various designs, including sleek, integrated options that seamlessly blend with roof aesthetics, enhancing visual appeal.

Employment Opportunities: The rapid growth of the solar industry has created numerous jobs, stimulating economic development and providing employment across the solar value chain, including installation, manufacturing, and maintenance.

Dispelling Common Misconceptions

Solar battery storage does not provide long-term backup power

When we went through the most frequently asked questions from homeowners, we saw one common theme that stood out. Many people are unaware of how long a solar battery can keep their houses powered up during power outages and rolling blackouts. This curiosity is understandable given that the amount of time a solar storage system can power important equipment varies. A few factors influence the lifespan of your solar battery:

The bottom line is that given the right conditions, your solar battery can last a good amount of time during a power outage, especially if it is able to recharge during the day.

Storage not being affordable

The latest and best device, like any technology, can frequently come at a high price. While the cost of a solar battery was higher in the beginning, many things have changed to make this clean energy alternative more accessible. To begin, the solar investment tax credit has been extended by the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act. The regulation was designed to make renewable energy sources more accessible, and its emphasis on standalone storage accomplishes just that. Local incentive programs can also be beneficial. Californians employing a solar storage system like Tesla Powerwall to regulate when to use stored solar energy during periods of high demand can experience larger payoffs under Net Energy Billing Tariff

Solar battery storage is not available in some climates

Great weather conditions are great for any technology, but solar + storage systems like Tesla Powerwall are actually quite resilient. They are built to withstand changing weather. While we advocate indoor installation, generally in a garage, homeowners have other options. Outdoor installations are available in shaded locations with temperatures ranging from 15 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit and are sheltered from other harsh and extreme weather.

Solar storage systems are adaptable and may operate in a variety of climates. Don’t let this myth keep you from being ready for Mother Nature.

Solar Battery Storage Is Dangerous

We won’t mince words: not all solar batteries are created equal, and some of the elements used in their construction are safer than others. Batteries like Tesla Powerwall were created with security in mind.

Sunpower SunVault along with Tesla Powerwall employs Lithium Iron Phosphate (LPF) chemistry, which is a more secure alternative to some of the other choices on the market. LPF batteries have a track record of being stable and performing at lower temperatures.
